The Secret to Max Efficiency: A Clean Evaporator Coil

Before it gets installed deep inside the dark, cramped confines of an attic or utility closet, it is rarely possible for a homeowner to see the most critical component of their air conditioning system in full daylight. The image above shows a brand new, uninstalled A-frame evaporator coil. Notice the thousands of incredibly thin, perfectly straight, and spotless aluminum fins stretching across the copper tubing. This pristine condition is the absolute gold standard for achieving maximum HVAC electrical efficiency.

The sole purpose of this massive metal honeycomb is heat transfer. Warm, humid air from your home is forced through these microscopic gaps by the blower motor. The freezing cold liquid refrigerant pumping through the copper tubes rapidly strips the heat out of the air. For this rapid heat exchange to work correctly, the metallic surfaces must be completely bare. If a cheap, low-MERV fiberglass air filter allows dust and pet dander to bypass the return vent, that dirt will immediately stick to the condensation-covered fins of the evaporator coil, creating a thick, insulating layer of mud.

Once the fins are insulated by dirt, the air can no longer touch the freezing cold metal. The heat transfer process stops dead in its tracks. To compensate, your outdoor compressor has to run for hours on end trying to satisfy the thermostat, burning massive amounts of electricity and skyrocketing your utility bill. Eventually, the dirty coil will freeze into a solid block of ice, shutting down the system completely. Maintaining a spotless evaporator coil through regular chemical cleanings and high-quality pleated air filters is the best investment you can make in the lifespan of your AC system.
